  Mildura Ballooning Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we take off from?
Mildura Ballooning has approximately twelve authorized launch sites within 5 – 10 minutes drive of the city and the location is chosen on the day depending on the wind direction and speed.  Our vehicle will transport you to the chosen field that will maximize your flight path for the day.

How high do we fly?Why balloon in Mildura
Hot Air Ballooning is generally a low level activity and we usually fly between 400-1000 ft (100-300m) above the ground.

How do we get back?
At the landing site wherever it will be after packing up, you will be returned to Mildura to celebrate with a champagne and cooked breakfast.

Will it be cold?
No, even in winter it is not cold in flight as we do not penetrate, but rather float with the breeze, in a calm environment, so you won't be cold. It is approximately 5 – 8 degrees Celsius warmer in the basket than on the ground.

What if I don't like heights?
The feeling in a balloon basket is a very secure one and we have never had a passenger feel uncomfortable about heights after lift off. Our passengers do not experience vertigo in the balloon even if they experience it standing on the edge of a cliff or a tall building, it is a different sensation.

Do Balloon Pilots need to be licensed?
Yes, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority control ballooning in much the same way as they do general aviation. Australian Commercial pilots are trained to the best standards in the world, and balloon companies are subject to periodical surveillance.

Your flightHow long can a Balloon stay aloft?
Depending on the load and temperature the normal fuel load will keep the balloon aloft for between 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Our scheduled flights are 45 to 60 minutes, we have almost twice the amount of fuel required for our flight time.

What happens if a wind springs up during flight?
The Bureau of Meteorology provide us with pre-recorded upper wind activity. From this information and forecast conditions, your pilot can decide whether to proceed with, or cancel your flight. We only proceed when all available information indicates a safe flight will be assured. If we cancel your flight you may re-book for another time.

Should I bring a camera?
Yes!, and a spare roll of film, as passengers have taken some wonderful photos from our balloons.

Do I need to be fit?
We ask you to advise your pilot of any medical condition you think could affect you during flight, however if you can climb into the basket unassisted and stand up for the scheduled flight time, then you are fit enough to enjoy the wonder of Hot Air Ballooning.
